How To Clean Gumboots: 7 Tips For Caring For Merry People Boots

by Rose White

Merry People boots are not just another pair of shoes; they are a reliable companion for outdoor enthusiasts, fashionistas, and anyone who values comfort and style.

The stylish waterpoof boots are designed to withstand various weather conditions, keep your feet dry, and elevate your overall look.

However, like any other investment, they require proper care and maintenance to ensure they serve you well for years to come.
As a long-time customer, here are my essential tips on how to care for your Merry People boots, preserving their quality and extending their life.

Merry People Care Guide

Merry People wellington boots are made from high-quality natural rubber outsoles and neoprene uppers. The combination of these materials results in a waterproof and durable footwear choice suitable for various outdoor activities. The good news is that they are easy to maintain and clean!

1. Choose the Correct Merry People Size

Choose the correct shoe size for a comfortable fit and to prevent your feet from slipping around or stretching the shoes.

Merry People sizing states that their boots run true to size, so I recommend ordering your normal shoe size.

Both the rubber and neoprene have some elasticity, so there is a little bit of stretch to the gumboots. They may feel tighter at the beginning but will eventually mould to the shape of your foot and that’s what makes them super comfortable.

The Merry People size guide shows the innersole measurements, making it easy to compare their boots to an existing pair of shoes you already own.

2. How to Clean Gumboots

As the Merry People boots are made of rubber, most of the dirt and water you encounter will simply slide off. But you’ll still want to give your boots a wipe-down before storing them to prevent grime or dust buildup.

When you’re cleaning your rubber boots remove any loose dirt or debris from the boots by gently tapping them together or using a medium bristle brush.

The rule of thumb for cleaning your Merry People gum boots is to use mild soap and soft cloths. Dip your cloth in ordinary dishwashing liquid, vinegar and water, or baking powder and water and gently clean in a circular motion. Do not use a cleaning product with harsh chemicals, an abrasive scourer, or heaven forbid, the washing machine!

Some people like to use a pencil eraser for harder stains, or even a few drops of olive oil.

3. How to Clean the Inside of Rubber Boots

To clean the inside neoprene lining of your Merry People gumboots, all you need is a low-pH shampoo or laundry detergent, a soft sponge or cloth and some cold water.

Mix 1 teaspoon of heavy-duty laundry detergent and 2 cups of warm water to make a cleaning solution. Soak a clean cloth in the mixture, then wipe down the entire interior of your boots. Then, dip another clean cloth in plain warm water and swipe it through the inside in a circular motion to rinse away the cleaning solution.

If you wore the boots in contaminated waters, disinfect them with a solution of pine oil or disinfectant and water. Scrub the inside and outside of your boots with a soft-bristled brush.

If you’ve got a pair of smelly boots, freshen them up by sprinkling about 1/4 cup of baking soda in each dry boot. You can leave the baking soda in your boots overnight, then empty the boots before wearing them the next time.

4. How to Remove Stains on Rubber Boots

For heavier mud and stubborn stains on your rubber shoes, follow these methods:

  • White Vinegar: Create a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts water. Take special care to dab the stained area with the solution using a soft cloth.
  • Baking Soda: Create a paste using baking soda and water. Apply it to the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it off.

5. How to Dry Wet Gumboots

A proper drying process for your Merry People boots is crucial to prevent any damage or deterioration.

The best way to dry your Merry People gumboots is by air-drying indoors in a well-ventilated area.

Don’t put them near a heater or radiator or use direct heat sources like hair dryers, as this can damage them and cause the material to crack or shrink.

If the inside of your boots is wet, stuff them with newspaper or paper towels to absorb excess moisture.  Then place the boots upside down in a warm, ventilated place. After 24 hours, remove the paper and repeat the process if needed until dry.

6. Gumboot Storage Tips

When not in use, follow these storage tips for your boots:

  • Cool and Dry: Store your Merry People boots in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. I have mine stacked on a shelf in the laundry. If you keep them outdoors and in direct sunlight they will wear much more easily and the rubber will crack.
  • Keep Them Upright: Store the boots upright to maintain their shape.
  • Avoid Pressure: Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the boots, as this can lead to deformation.

Keeping your boots clean and applying a silicon spray regularly will help add moisture to your boots and help prevent cracking.

7. Use the Merry People Care Kit

As our family owns numerous pairs of Merry People boots, I have invested in a Merry People Care Kit.

The kit is made to help you take care of your rubber boots, and contains:

  • Silicon spray: Provides a protective coating that makes boots more resistant to water, dirt, mud, and snow. Apply immediately after cleaning and drying.
  • Rubber conditioner: Protects the rubber and keeps boots looking new. Apply after cleaning and drying.
  • Charcoal pouch: Helps absorb moisture and prevent boots from getting smelly. Place inside boots after cleaning and drying.
